5 Things to Do in Tokyo You Won't Believe

We may not be able to travel at the moment but when we can, we will be able to experience some of the weirdest and wonderful things in the magnificent country of Japan.

There's no doubt that most of those unusual things were in the beautiful city of Tokyo. It's in the capital that you often see people dressed in Manga themed Cosplay in the streets or the most futuristic sights that will make you think you have travelled through time to the year 2032 or beyond.

Here are 5 amazing things you'll find in Tokyo that need to be seen to be believed.

1: Go to a Robot Restaurant

It's true Japan is known for its amazing futuristic technology and Tokyo itself feels like it's straight out of a "Blade Runner" movie but to get the real experience go to the restaurant completely run by robots. Like all cool things in Japan it's located in a basement in Shinjuku’s Kabukicho district. For around ¥7,000 entry fee you can experience dining with quirky giant robots throughout a 90-minute show each night.

2: Experience the Cat Cafe

Tokyo has a number of cafes where you can go and experience tea or coffee while you pet the animals at the cafes. Owning a pet can be difficult in crazy city life, so having the ability to go and interact with one then hand it back is a wonderful idea. It's a bit like being an uncle, nice to see the kids, but hand them back an hour later and go off to a bar with your mates. Cat Cafes seem to be the most popular around the Shinjuku area but you can also see other animal cafes, like Owls, Bunnies or the Hedgehog café in Harajuku.

3: Sleep in the Capsule Hotel

Looking for a quick nap, experience life inside a bubble with the capsule hotels. While mainly available for Men only there have been female-only hotels open up. Be warned though, they are small and of varied quality, so don't expect that futuristic spaceship look that you see in pictures at all of them.

Some just look like a 1970s microwave oven and are about as comfortable.

4: The Ninja Restuarant

The moment you walk into the ninja restaurant in Akasaka you know you are in for a treat. There are no visible doors, the waiter claps their hands and a ninja drops down from a hole that opens in the ceiling to escort you through a hidden tunnel across a spiked bridge all before taking you to your seat where you experience food that is magical and entertaining. Ninjas will also perform tricks as you dine. A fully immersive experience that will have you talking about it for years to come.

5: Do real-life Mario Kart on the streets of Tokyo

A heart-pumping way to see the city via a go-kart. Although not officially licenced by Nintendo once you put the outfit on and enter your vehicle you really forget that it is "inspired by".

We don't recommend dropping banana peels though, there are strict littering laws in Japan.
